The Midwest Book Review: “In every code there is some degree of logic, and finding that logic is very much vital to breaking it. “Breaking the Beale Code” follows the Treasure Hunters Club as they search for an ancient and rich treasure of history. With millions of dollars and the life of a friend on the line, they are racing against time in this work of young adult adventure. A fine pick for any young reader stepping towards more standard novel fare, “Breaking the Beale Code” is highly recommended.”

After reading The Treasure Hunters Club: Secrets of the Magical Medallions, I enjoyed it so much, I passed the book on to my grandson. He is reading it now, and says it’s the best book he has ever read, and will recommend it to his friends who like to read. This book is very exciting, and will become a favorite for all ages.

I recently finished The Treasure Hunters Club: Secrets Of The Magical Medallions by first-time author Sean McCartney.

Written for children and pre-teens, Treasure Hunters follows four middle school kids who face everyday real teenage problems including hard home-lives, bullies and a thirst for adventure. The teens form their own club in an effort to turn their ordinary lives into something exciting.

Tommy Reed, whose uncle is an actual treasure hunter, feels his parents (mostly his dad) don’t understand him. He takes refuge in the makeshift clubhouse with his best friends and fellow treasure hunters, Chris, Jackson and Shannon.

Tired of looking for "ancient soda pop cans" and cast offs from Tommy’s uncle Diamond Jack Reed, the club wishes for something more. They soon get their wish when Tommy receives a package from his uncle containing what looks like a piece of ocean junk but turns out to be a much sought-after medallion.

McCartney’s characters are right on, not surprising since he is a middle school teacher himself. The story is full of kids facing their fears and living out their wildest dreams - the stuff fiction is made of. Oh, and did I mention magic?

As per usual, I had a problem with the reference to the parents (no surprise there). McCartney paints Tommy’s dad as an abusive bum and his mother as someone too brow-beaten to stand up for herself or Tommy.

This is real life, right? The only issue I had with this story line is that there was no resolution. The uncle is the hero and the parents aren’t mentioned when the psychopaths out for revenge and murder show up.

Even the worst parent will show a little concern when their kid is in trouble. It wasn’t that the bad home life was a bad plot point, I just felt it wasn’t developed enough. Overall, the book was pretty decent and young readers will enjoy the adventure and suspense.

Sean McCartney’s respect and affection for his young readers shines on every page of Secrets of the Magical Medallions. Tommy Reed and his famous uncle, treasure hunter Diamond Jack Reed, are real and enduring characters along with Tommy’s friends Jackson, Chris and Shannon who are The Treasure Hunters Club. Exciting adventure, vivid characters, and a touch of real history combine skillfully to entertain and teach. The author’s master’s degree in education enables him to present a little history in a page-turner adventure. When the Magical Medallion mystery is finally solved, the reader wants more of The Treasure Hunters Club. Fortunately for young readers and parents of young readers, Magical Medallion is only the first in the series of Treasure Hunters Club novels. Like Tommy Reed and his colorful Uncle Jack, we will wait anxiously for Sean McCartney to take us on our next adventure.
